Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) is the most unique art gallery I have ever been too! There is an indoor gallery as well as an outdoor labyrinth consisting of 3,000 square feet of mosaicked space. Individually, the objects that make up the floors and walls appear to be broken pieces of junk. Taken as a whole, however, the entire structure is an incredible feat of organized chaos. The artist, Isaiah Zagar, has essentially created something from nothing and it is truly amazing!
Both Zagar and his wife, Julia, have been a big part of revitalizing the South Street neighborhood since the 1960s. Many of the details at PMG reflect their life together. Zagar spent 14 years developing the land and adding mosaics to create PMG and continues to design mosaic murals in and around the South Street area. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of his work the next time I’m back in Philly!
