Today I’m picking up where I left off with our whereabouts. Back in September, I went up to Newport, Rhode Island for Billy’s graduation from Naval Officer Development School. I had never been to Rhode Island so I took a few days off and made a vacation out of it. My in-laws were also able to join us for a couple of the days. I loved Newport and don’t know why I never visited sooner! The city is so charming with lots to do. One of the most popular things to do in Newport is explore the Gilded Age mansions lining Bellevue Avenue. We toured The Breakers and The Elms. The Breakers is also near an entry point to Cliff Walk where you can walk along the coastline.

One of my favorite things that we did was brunch at Castle Hill Inn followed by lounging on the lawn. Castle Hill is situated so that there are panoramic views of the Atlantic. You’d be surprised how relaxing it is to watch boats and yachts sail around. I could have spent the whole day there. We were also able to go sailing ourselves on a restored America’s Cup yacht. Billy got volunteered (by me) to help the crew steer and put the sail up and down.

On our sail, we saw Fort Adams, a former US Army post and decided that we would visit. I enjoyed learning about the planning behind such a large fortress and it was perfect for a military history buff like Billy. Other highlights from our trip included the International Tennis Hall of Fame, drinks on the roof of the Vanderbilt Grace, and Newport Vineyards (see more here). Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Newport and hope we get another chance to visit!
